Squak Mountain Stone

The Natural Stone Countertop Alternative

stone countertop alternativeSquak Mountain Stone, a countertop comprised of recycled paper, recycled glass, and low-carbon cement has caught the attention of homeowners around the nation and those of us at Greenovations for its natural beauty. Squak Mountain Stone is comfortable in turn-of-the-century restorations and cutting-edge modern designs. More durable than poured concrete, yet as warm as soapstone.

squak mountain stoneIn the words of its inventor “...It’s rustic. It’s varied. It doesn’t follow any of the “rules” established by modern countertop companies: you don’t “fix” it, you don’t dress it up, it won’t look seamless and it most certainly will not look like it came from a cookie-cutter factory. Squak is the “rebel” in the countertop world.”

With kitchen design trends heading more and more towards poured concrete we’re excited to offer an alternative to 100% quarried materials. Like granite and other natural stones, concrete is an energy intensive, high CO2 producing material. While some regional craftsmen of poured concrete have devised means of using 35% or more recycled materials in their slabs, they are few and far between. Squak Mountain stone, however, is comprised of over 50%-recycled materials. As well, Squak uses a low-carbon cement with a binder that emits two-thirds fewer CO2 emissions than Portland cement.

Squak Mountain Stone surfaces are:

  • Comprised of recycled paper, recycled glass and low-carbon cement.
  • Has a “live” edge displaying its unique texture and color saturation
    • Available in six warm, natural colors
    • Resembles soapstone or limestone
    • Hand-cast into “slabs” as an alternative to natural or quarried stone
  • Doesn’t contain any steel reinforcing, so it’s easy to make installation adjustments
  • Over 50%-recycled content
  • Sealed with a non-toxic, highly durable, soy based clear coat or Tung Oil
  • Paper has not been chemically processed
